Fall Carrots

Posted by Dawn Perry

IMG_1475

Fall is by far my favorite time of year. I love the weather, the leaves changing colors, the fruits and vegetables pouring into the farmers’ market. I found these amazing carrots at our Union Square Greenmarket here in NYC on Saturday:  yellow, white, red and orange, all with varying degrees of sweetness. I bought 2 big bunches and now I’m just trying to figure out what to make. I’m thinking curried carrot soup or maybe some sort of carrot cake. What do you think? Would you make with these beauties?

Apple Pie with the Flakiest Crust

apple pie

I made an apple pie this past weekend. I used half butter and half leaf lard in the crust. It was the flakiest crust I have ever made!! Here is a link to EDF’s favorite pie crust – simply substitute half of the butter for cubed leaf lard.  If you can’t track down leaf lard, regular lard works just fine.

Here at Everyday Food, we have so much going on we thought we should blog about it to give you an idea of what happens here behind the scenes, and in our day to day cooking lives. Look out for posts from our test kitchen – they will share the inspiration and evolution of the recipes from the magazine, insider tips and tricks and favourite gadgets. Plus see what the team has been up to when not putting a magazine together – I have already heard that Alberto went apple picking, Heather cheese tasting and Char made pickles – yes, we are a food obsessed bunch! Plus we will be sharing snack ideas, what we cook at home, sources, and just about anything that inspires us to make up the pages of Everyday Food. So, from our kitchen to yours – enjoy!

Autumn Bounty

Posted by Dawn Perry

Indian Corn and Winter Squash

Shorter, colder days are upon us here in New York. Winter is closing in and that means just a few more weeks of autumn bounty at the Greenmarket. Soon it will be mostly onions, potatoes and apples until spring. On Wednesday I headed over to Union Square in search of some beautiful turnips for our photo shoot and was thrilled to see so many beautiful things still available. In addition to the turnips, I left with sweet potatoes, green beans, arugula, rosemary, parsley, apples, pears, radishes, carrots, celery, and Brussels sprouts — and I would have continued shopping if I could carry more!
